Student Advisor Management Tool

Existing Function Redesign

The Student Advisor Management Tool or "SAM" is a tool used by advisors at Old Dominion University to reassign students to University advisors.  The original tool was at end-of-life on the server.  A redesign needed to be added to the myODU Portal.

The problem:

SAM was soon to be removed from the University's server and needed to be redesigned. The old product was slow and clunky- users had no bulk-action functionality. The process impeded work flow tremendously. SAM UI was outdated and did not match the myODU Portal designs.

The goal:

Redesign SAM tool- keep core functionality the same but add bulk-select and process automation features in the back end.

Original tool:

Screenshots of the original SAM tool are unable to be shared, as all existing documentation contains sensitive student and faculty information.

Feedback and Going Forward

While final images of the product cannot be shared due to content sensitivity, stakeholders and advising team members were pleased with the outcome of the product. While the main functionality still works for the rules of the original tool, the updated UI brings a fresh look to the tool. The bulk action was a fan-favorite addition, allowing advisors to more efficiently complete the task flow. Developers are currently working on automating some of the process to help shorten time spent in the tool. The tool will continue to be updated as needed.
